Sunflower husk

Sunflower husk is a solid agricultural biomass originating as a by-product of sunflower processing (oil extraction, feed production). It is a light, fibrous material with a relatively high lower heating value compared with many other agricultural residues. In energy applications it can be used in loose form but is far more often briquetted or pelletized to facilitate handling, transport, and automatic feeding. Due to its higher ash content and specific ash behavior prone to slagging, it requires boilers and furnaces designed for agro biomass, with appropriate ash removal and combustion temperature control. It is predominantly used in energy systems and industrial boiler houses integrated with oil mills and processing plants.

Category

  • Biomass
  • Solid agro biomass (by-product of sunflower processing)
  • Renewable energy source based on residues from the food industry

Variations

  • Loose sunflower husk for boilers firing loose agro biomass
  • Sunflower husk briquettes for medium and large boiler plants
  • Sunflower husk pellets for automatic boilers with screw feeding systems
  • Blends with wood pellets or wood chips for more stable combustion and reduced ash-related issues

Applications In The Industry

Energy systems

In energy systems, sunflower husk is used as a fuel in biomass heating plants, boiler houses, and cogeneration units, especially in regions with a developed oilseed processing industry. Sunflower husk pellets and briquettes are fired in automatic boilers supplying small and medium district heating networks and central boiler houses serving multiple buildings. In cogeneration units, sunflower husk can serve as the main fuel for combined heat and power generation, typically in plants integrated with oil mills where a continuous fuel stream is available. Depending on boiler design (grate-fired, fluidized bed), operators may use pure sunflower husk or blends with woody biomass to improve flame stability, reduce slagging, and optimize emission performance.

Industry

In industrial applications, sunflower husk is an important fuel for process heat and steam in the food and oilseed processing industries, as well as in associated processing sectors. Industrial boiler houses within oil mills often operate on pellets or briquettes produced from their own husk, closing the energy loop of the facility and reducing external fuel costs. Sunflower husk can supply steam or hot water boilers that feed dryers, oil refining and deodorization lines, pasteurization processes, and space heating for production halls and auxiliary buildings. In other industries with access to a reliable supply chain, sunflower husk can replace coal or heavy fuel oil, provided that combustion systems are adapted for agro biomass and flue gas cleaning meets environmental standards.

Benefits Of Use

  • Efficient utilization of a food-industry by-product (sunflower husk) that would otherwise have lower added value or require disposal
  • Substitution of fossil fuels with locally available agro biomass, particularly in sunflower-producing regions
  • Potentially lower fuel operating costs for oil mills, food industry plants, and local energy systems
  • Reduced overall greenhouse gas emissions compared with reference fossil fuels, assuming appropriate boiler design and operation
