Straw bales

Straw bales are solid agricultural biomass formed by pressing cereal crop residues (wheat, barley, rye, oats, etc.) into rectangular or round bales of various sizes. They are a bulky, fibrous fuel with a stable lower heating value typical of cereal straw. In energy applications, straw bales are used for direct combustion in dedicated bale-fired boilers and furnaces, where the bales are fed into the combustion chamber manually or by mechanical systems. Due to higher ash content and greater slagging tendency compared with woody biomass, they require boilers specifically designed for agro biomass, with controlled furnace temperatures and efficient ash handling. Straw bales are most commonly used in local and regional energy systems and industrial facilities located in agricultural areas.

Category

  • Biomass
  • Solid agro biomass from cereal harvest residues
  • Renewable energy source based on agricultural residues

Variations

  • Large rectangular straw bales for medium and large boiler plants and district heating systems
  • Round straw bales for small and medium plants equipped with suitable bale furnaces
  • Different quality classes depending on cereal type, moisture content, and storage conditions
  • Mixed bales (straw from different crops) for users prioritizing availability, with adjusted combustion regimes

Applications In The Industry

Energy systems

In energy systems, straw bales are used as a fuel in heating plants and boiler houses supplying district heating networks, hot-water grids, and larger buildings such as schools, hospitals, and public facilities. Typical installations use bale-fired boilers where bales are loaded by hand or via mechanical feeders into the combustion chamber, with automated control of combustion air and flue gas extraction. Larger plants may employ conveyor systems and automatic bale feeding. Straw bales are well suited for small and medium energy systems in agricultural regions with a stable local feedstock base and short transport distances. Combined with thermal storage tanks, they enable flexible operation of heating systems throughout the season.

Industry

In industrial applications, straw bales provide process heat and steam for agricultural processing, livestock, and food industries, as well as for grain and crop dryers. Industrial straw-bale boiler houses typically supply steam or hot water to drying processes, thermal treatment, hygienic processing (pasteurization, sterilization), and space heating of farm buildings or production facilities. They require dedicated bale handling equipment (forklifts, automatic loaders), covered storage for fuel quality preservation, and flue gas cleaning systems that comply with emission regulations. In industrial settings, straw bales can partially or fully replace coal or heavy fuel oil, particularly where own or contracted agricultural production ensures reliable fuel supply.

Benefits Of Use

  • Utilization of harvest residues as a locally available energy feedstock, reducing open-field burning
  • Substitution of fossil fuels in local energy systems and industrial boiler houses, especially in agricultural regions
  • Potentially lower fuel costs through long-term contracts with local farmers
  • Reduced greenhouse gas emissions compared with reference fossil fuels, assuming properly designed and operated combustion systems
