Creatine
Creatine is a naturally occurring compound synthesized in the human body from three amino acids: glycine, arginine, and methionine. Approximately 95 percent of total body stores are found in skeletal muscle in the form of phosphocreatine, with smaller amounts present in the brain, liver, and kidneys. Its primary role is participation in the production and regeneration of ATP, the basic energy carrier in cells, making it essential for activities requiring short, intense bursts of effort. Creatine is naturally found in animal-derived foods, primarily red meat, poultry, and fish, with concentrations ranging from 4 to 5 grams per kilogram. The body additionally produces about 1 gram per day through endogenous synthesis. For industrial purposes, creatine is produced synthetically, most commonly through the reaction of sodium or potassium sarcosinate with cyanamide, followed by purification and crystallization.
