Wood pellets

Wood pellets are a solid biofuel in the form of small cylindrical granules, typically 6–8 mm in diameter, produced by high‑pressure compaction of milled and dried wood residues (sawdust, shavings, wood dust) without chemical binders. During pelletizing, natural lignin in the wood softens and binds the particles, ensuring mechanical strength and durability. Wood pellets feature very low moisture content, high and consistent energy density, and a stable lower heating value, making them suitable for fully automated boilers and stoves in commercial buildings and households. Their uniform size and flow properties enable easy mechanical or pneumatic transport and automated feeding, combined with low ash content and relatively clean combustion.

Category

  • Biofuels
  • Solid biomass – pelletized fuel from wood residues
  • Renewable energy source obtained by mechanical processing of wood waste from sawmills, the wood industry, and forestry

Variations

  • Premium wood pellets (low ash content, minimal bark share, high homogeneity – typically for households and smaller commercial boiler rooms)
  • Industrial wood pellets (higher tolerated bark and ash content, for more robust boiler systems)
  • Pellets from softwood (conifers), hardwood (beech, oak, etc.), or mixed pellets
  • Different quality classes according to relevant standards (e.g. ENplus A1, A2), with specified limits for moisture and ash

Applications In The Industry

Commercial use

In commercial facilities such as hotels, guesthouses, apartment buildings, schools, small office complexes, and sports centres, wood pellets are used in fully automated biomass boilers of low to medium capacity. These boilers provide space heating and domestic hot water with high energy efficiency and advanced control systems (automatic ignition, shut‑down, and load modulation). Pellets are delivered in bulk (pneumatic filling of silos) or in bags and are automatically conveyed from storage to the burner using screw conveyors or vacuum systems. In commercial boiler rooms, wood pellets often replace heating oil or natural gas in small and medium installations, reducing fuel costs and enabling a partial shift to renewable energy sources.

Households

In households, wood pellets are used in pellet stoves, pellet central‑heating boilers, and combined pellet cookers. These appliances offer a high level of automation: automatic ignition, power modulation, and programmable operating schedules, delivering convenience comparable to gas or oil systems. Wood pellets are typically supplied in small bags and stored in dry rooms, requiring significantly less space than firewood for the same useful heat. In single‑family houses, apartments with individual heating systems, and holiday homes, pellet systems provide:

  • stable, comfortable heating with minimal manual intervention (periodic hopper refilling);
  • fast start‑up and shut‑down, important for intermittent use;
  • reduced ash production and therefore fewer cleaning intervals for combustion chambers and chimneys compared with firewood or coal.

Benefits Of Use

  • High and consistent lower heating value, low moisture content, and good energy efficiency in automatic boilers and stoves
  • Standardized shape and granule size enabling fully automated storage, conveying, and feeding, suitable for both commercial buildings and households
  • Utilization of wood waste as a raw material, improving overall wood resource efficiency and reducing waste from sawmills and the wood industry
  • Potentially lower heating costs and reduced CO₂ emissions compared with fossil fuels used in small boiler houses (heating oil, coal), while maintaining a high level of user comfort
