Vital Wheat Gluten

Vital wheat gluten is a concentrated plant protein ingredient derived from wheat, containing a high level of crude protein (typically 75–80%) with specific functional properties of forming an elastic gluten network. In feed applications it serves as a highly digestible source of protein and energy, as well as a technological component improving pellet and extrudate texture. In aquaculture and swine nutrition, vital wheat gluten enhances pellet stability in water, increases palatability and provides greater formulation flexibility with the option to partially replace animal proteins.

Source

  • Produced from wheat flour via wet fractionation, separating starch and soluble fractions while concentrating the protein (gluten) fraction.
  • After washing and purification, the gluten is dried and milled into a fine powder or granules with controlled moisture and particle size.
  • Feed/pet grade products come from facilities operating food/ feed safety and quality systems (microbiology, mycotoxins, heavy metals control).

Variations

  • Standard vital wheat gluten (approx. 75–80% protein) for general use in feed and aquafeed.
  • Products with tailored particle size (fine powder, granules) for improved processing in extrusion and pelleting.
  • Gluten combined with wheat starch or other plant proteins in complex protein blends for specific formulation concepts.

Applications In The Industry

Aqua

In aquaculture, vital wheat gluten is used in extruded and pelleted feeds for fish and other aquatic species as a highly digestible plant protein and functional binder. Its ability to form an elastic network contributes to:

  • improved mechanical strength and water stability of pellets,
  • reduced nutrient leaching and lower water pollution,
  • partial replacement of fish meal and other animal proteins, especially in starter/grower feeds where good amino acid profile and high digestibility are critical.

It is applied in complete feeds for various freshwater and marine fish species, as well as in specialized premixes and concentrates for aquaculture.

Swine

In swine nutrition, vital wheat gluten is an important source of highly digestible protein, particularly in prestarter and starter feeds for piglets, helping the transition from milk‑based to plant‑based diets. Due to its favorable digestibility and low levels of antinutritional factors compared to some other plant proteins, it is suitable for:

  • prestarter and starter concentrates and complete feeds for piglets,
  • grower/finisher feeds as a supplement to overall protein profile and improvement of feed conversion,
  • specialized high‑energy or reduced‑protein diets where optimization of amino acid balance is achieved together with synthetic amino acids.

It also supports better processing characteristics during pelleting (pellet hardness, reduced fines).

Benefits Of Use

  • High level of highly digestible plant protein, suitable for partial replacement of more expensive animal proteins in aquafeed and swine diets.
  • Excellent functional properties (binding, elasticity) improve pellet and extrudate quality, water stability and reduce nutrient losses.
  • Increases formulation flexibility under conditions of fluctuating availability of fish meal and other protein raw materials.
  • Supports good feed conversion and consistent growth performance (especially in piglets and young fish) when included as part of balanced complete feeds.
